When to use usted

Default to usted with:

Older people you don't know well
Doctors, lawyers, officials in professional settings
Customer service — both ways
Police and authorities
When someone uses usted with you — match their register
Written formal communication — letters, emails to officials

Switching from usted to tú

Often, the older/higher-status person invites: Puedes tutearme. (You can use tú with me.)
Or: Trátame de tú. (Use tú with me.)
You can also ask: ¿Le puedo tutear? (May I use tú with you?)
In Spain, young people almost always use tú with each other.
In Colombia/Mexico, usted is used much more — even between friends in some regions.

Formal writing register

Key differences in formal writing

Avoid contractions: del, al are fine, but don't use colloquial shortenings
Use subjunctive more: Le ruego que me envíe... (I request you send...)
Use conditional for politeness: Desearía... / Le agradecería...
Use passive voice: Se ha recibido su solicitud. (Your application has been received.)
Avoid filler words: No pues, vale, bueno — use sin embargo, no obstante
